Quick answer

Ute and van fit-out finance funds the canopy, drawer units, shelving, racks, ladder racks and power set-up that turn a tradie's vehicle into a mobile workshop. It's usually funded with the vehicle or as a stand-alone upgrade. Lenders look at your trading history, contribution and the total cost, and a good fit-out often pays back in time saved every week.

Key points

  • A well-planned fit-out saves time on every job — that's the business case.
  • Fit-outs can be funded with the vehicle or as a separate upgrade.
  • Each asset under $20,000 may qualify for the instant asset write-off if your business is eligible.
  • Check the vehicle's payload: steel canopies, drawers and tools add up fast.
Common items
Canopy, drawers, racking, ladder rack, power
Unsecured (trading businesses)
Typically $5k – $500k
Write-off threshold
Under $20,000 per asset (eligible businesses)

Every tradie knows the feeling: twenty minutes at the start of a job digging through the tray for the right fitting, then another ten at the end putting it all back. Multiply that by every job, every week, and a messy vehicle quietly costs you a day’s work a month. A proper fit-out fixes that — and funding it sensibly means you don’t have to raid the job account to do it.

What goes into a tradie fit-out?

It depends on your trade, but common items include:

  • Canopy or service body — aluminium or steel, with gull-wing or roller doors
  • Drawer systems — heavy-duty slide-out drawers for tools and fittings
  • Shelving and racking — modular units, parts bins, cable reels
  • Ladder racks, roof racks and pipe tubes
  • Power — dual battery, inverter, solar, lighting
  • Security — locks, alarms, GPS tracking
  • Signage — your business name, phone number and licence number, done properly

For a plumber, electrician, mobile mechanic, sparkie or locksmith, the vehicle is the workshop. What goes in it decides how fast you work and how professional you look when you pull up.

How do lenders look at a fit-out for a tradie?

Tradies with a trading history are often in a good position, because regular payments from customers and builders show up clearly in bank statements.

SituationTypical approach
New vehicle plus fit-outFunded as one project, looking at total cost and contribution
Fit-out for an existing vehicleStand-alone upgrade funding sized on turnover
Tools and gear as wellCan often be included in broader business funding
Owner with property equityProperty-secured options from $20,000 for bigger projects

For a tradie who’s already invoicing steadily, unsecured funding usually runs from $5k to $500k, depending on turnover. If your business is newer or the project is large, property security can widen your options.

Does a fit-out pay for itself?

Often it does, and it helps to do the rough maths before you buy. Illustrative example: a sole-trader electrician reckons a drawer and racking system saves 25 minutes a day in searching, loading and unloading. Over a working year, that’s many hours freed up for billable work or simply going home earlier. Against that, the fit-out has a cost and a repayment. If the time saved is worth more than the weekly repayment, the fit-out is doing its job. (Illustrative only — do the sums with your own charge-out rate.)

The truck-stop calculator can help. Put in the fit-out cost and your own contribution, then test a normal and a quiet week to see how the repayment sits.

What about weight and tax?

Payload. Steel canopies, drawer systems and a full load of tools are heavy. Check your vehicle’s payload and gross vehicle mass before you choose a fit-out, and talk to the supplier about lighter options if you’re close. If your vehicle’s GVM is more than 4.5 tonnes, the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator treats it as a heavy vehicle, with different rules.

Instant asset write-off. The ATO’s instant asset write-off lets eligible small businesses with aggregated turnover under $10 million immediately deduct assets costing less than $20,000 each. The ATO says the government has legislated to make the $20,000 threshold permanent from 1 July 2026. The full cost of each asset must be under the limit, so a big integrated fit-out may not qualify, while separately purchased items might. Our guide to buying a work van and the tax that comes with it covers this in more detail, including GST credits and the car limit.

BAS timing. If you claim GST credits on the fit-out, the timing of the purchase affects your next BAS. Plan it with your bookkeeper, and see our page on BAS time for mobile traders.

New vehicle, or fit out the one you’ve got?

If your current ute or van has good kilometres left, plenty of payload and suits your work, a fit-out can breathe new life into it. If it’s already costing you in repairs, putting several thousand dollars of drawers into it means paying to transfer them later. Some fit-outs move easily between vehicles; others don’t. Ask your supplier.

Security matters as much as storage

A well-fitted van full of tools is a target. Theft doesn’t just cost the tools; it costs the days you can’t work while you replace them. When you plan a fit-out, include lockable drawers and canopy doors, an alarm or immobiliser, GPS tracking and good lighting where you park at night. Some insurers ask about security measures, and a van that can’t be easily cleaned out overnight protects both your income and your repayment record. Keep an up-to-date list of tools and serial numbers too — it speeds up any insurance claim.

Frequently asked questions

Can I finance a ute canopy on its own?

Often, yes. A canopy, drawer system or racking can be funded as a stand-alone upgrade, especially if you're an established trader. Bring the supplier's quote so the cost is clear.

Does a fit-out count for the instant asset write-off?

The ATO lets eligible small businesses (aggregated turnover under $10 million) immediately deduct assets costing less than $20,000 each. Whether your fit-out qualifies depends on how it's purchased and installed, so check with your accountant.

Should I fit out a new vehicle or my current one?

If your current vehicle has plenty of life left and enough payload, fitting it out can be good value. If it's getting tired, putting an expensive fit-out into it can mean paying to move everything again later.

Can I include tools in the funding?

Tools and equipment used in the business can often be included in a broader business funding package. Tell us exactly what you're buying when you enquire.
